TAVUS BABA & MERAM BAĞLARI

Meram was established in the valley on the southeastern slopes of Takkeli Mountain. Throughout history, its nature’s beauty has been the subject to travel books and dîvâns, and its fame has spread all over the world. Today it is a beautiful promenade covered with forests. Meram’s vineyards located here also gives its name to the district. The Tomb of Tavus Baba, which is located in Meram Bağları and it is discussed among people whether it belongs to a woman or a man, is also the starting point of some legends. It’s rumored that one day a beautiful woman from the Indian subcontinent settled here. Everyday she played the rebab (a type of instrument) and sang. One day this beautiful woman, whose face no one had ever seen, did not play her rebab. Realizing that the sound on the hill had stopped, the people got curious and went up the hill. They saw that there was nothing but a rebab and a pile of peacock feathers. Later, Tavus Baba’s tomb was built here and the peacock feathers were kept in the tomb. According to another rumor, a woman who had fallen in love without seeing Mevlana knew that Mevlana always went up to Meram Bağları. She settled on the top of the vineyards just to see him a little bit. She spent rest of her life watching Mevlana from afar.
